Here There Gardens

The Here There Camp has several gardens that began in March of 2020, when campmember Tim, with the encouragement of Leela, began tending the land. It started with a bit of tilling, some overgrown onions, and mustard seeds from a nearby garden.

Other campmembers took interest in gardening, adopting composting practices that helped the Here There gardens flourish and expand.

In particular, the addition of “biochar” has helped remediate the soil that had been compacted from road construction, generating a lush stretch of land for the enjoyment of passersby.

The diverse flowering plants attract bees, birds and insects that are uncommon in human-occupied land, despite Here There being a small stretch of land between an active BART line and a busy traffic corridor.

Many young fruit and nut trees are spreading roots at Here There.
