Anti-mining protests that have roiled Panama for the last two weeks turned deadly on Tuesday when a man allegedly shot and killed two demonstrators, according to police.

A chilling video posted by bystanders on X, formerly known as Twitter, showed a disheveled elderly man apparently frustrated with the logjam trying to force the protestors to remove a barrier blocking the Pan American highway about 50 miles south of the capital, before pulling out a pistol and opening fire. Panama’s National Police later said they arrested the suspected gunman at the scene of the shooting.

The unusual scene of violence is the latest flashpoint in some of the largest protests to hit the Central American nation since Panamanians flooded the streets en masse to demonstrate against the dictatorship of Manuel Noriega in the 1980s.

For weeks, tens of thousands of protestors have vented their fury at a controversial mining contract given to Minera Panama, the local subsidiary of a Canadian mining company, to extract copper, a key component in electric car batteries.

The contract allows Canada’s First Quantum Minerals to restart an open-pit copper mine surrounded by rain forest for the next 20 years, with the possibility of extending for another 20 years.

Environmentalists say the mine could contaminate drinking water and devastate tracts of the 32,000 acres the company negotiated use of, in exchange for yearly payments of $375 million.

Panama’s government has promised, however, that the mine will bring thousands of jobs in addition to the badly needed revenue. First Quantum Minerals did not respond to CNN’s request for comment on the protests.

‘Panamanians are suffering’

Opposition to the mine has united environmentalists, indigenous groups and teachers’ and construction unions who see allegations of backroom dealings between the government and the mining company as further evidence of widespread official corruption.

The protestors accuse the government of selling off the nation’s natural resources at the same moment many Panamanians have been hit with the costs of rising inflation and are feeling the impacts of climate change.

“Panamanians are suffering from lack of water, suffering from droughts, principally in the central provinces, animals that die, harvests that don’t happen,” environmental activist Martita Cornejo told CNN en Español.

“The government did not guage the opposition from Panamanian society to a mining contract.”

But former US ambassador to Panama John Feeley said while much of the outrage is real, the new contract announcement has also presented an opportunity for some groups to try to force their own concessions and win sweetheart deals from the government.

“This is the horrible thing about Panama: Even when you protest corruption, you are probably facilitating it as well,” he said.

Weeks of road blocks set up by protesters have shut down the country, preventing farmers from bringing crops to market and sequestering Panamanians in their homes. According to Panama’s association of company executives, the standstill inflicts $80 million in daily losses to local businesses. Celebrations to mark Panama’s independence from Colombia in 1903 were also widely cancelled last week.

Panama’s President Laurentino Cortizo has defended the mining deal after its announcement on October 20, saying the agreement would create jobs and revenue for Panama.

The mine had provided a rare economic bright spot for Panama where tourism has been slow to recover from the pandemic and the drought has reduced traffic though the Panama Canal, which is expected to a cause a drop of revenue of $200 million in 2024.

“We made the right decision, not the easiest one,” Cortizo said. “After a difficult and complicated negotiation for more than two years, a contract was agreed in 2023 between the company Minera Panama and the Panamanian State, which guarantees much better terms and conditions for the country.”

But as the protests have dragged on, Panama’s government has offered concessions that have done little to deflate the crisis: Last week, congress passed a moratorium on all future metal mining and Cortizo called for a nationwide referendum in December on the controversial project.

In 2017, Panama’s Supreme Court declared another contract to operate the copper mine as unconstitutional, forcing the mining company and government to renegotiate the deal.

Opponents now say they are hopeful that an announcement by Panama’s Supreme Court this week that it is examining the legality of the contract could once again kill the deal.

Whatever the resolution to the crisis, it may be too late to repair the damage done to Panama’s reputation in the region as a rare bastion of political and economic stability.

“After 6 days of deliberation, the jury has found animal rescuer Wayne Hsiung GUILTY on three of the four charges in the #SonomaRescueTrial. This includes felony conspiracy and misdemeanor trespass at Sunrise Farms and misdemeanor trespass at Reichardt Duck Farm. The jury could not reach a unanimous verdict on the felony conspiracy charge from the Reichardt action, resulting in a “hung jury” mistrial on that charge.

Wayne was cuffed and immediately taken into custody. He has a sentencing hearing set for November 30th. He will be in jail until then, without bail. We will be mobilizing at the sentencing hearing to support Wayne and defend the #RightToRescue. Please join us on November 30th in Santa Rosa.

Wayne will be appealing this conviction, and this means he has the chance to establish case law in the appellate court. Winning an appeal would not only vindicate his actions but also set a legal precedent that would impact future animal rescue cases.

The mass open rescues at Sunrise Farms and Reichardt Duck Farm that led to this trial were last-resort efforts to aid animals after the authorities ignored repeated reports showing clear evidence of criminal animal cruelty. If the jury had been allowed to see the full extent of suffering at these factory farms, they might have understood that the intent of our actions was not to commit a crime but simply to aid severely neglected animals. This conviction won’t stop us from taking action we know is legally and morally right to aid suffering animals.

In fact, immediately after the verdict, DxE activists went straight from the courtroom to the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office to report new footage from Sunrise Farms and Reichardt that shows sick, injured animals are still languishing at these facilities.

While the District Attorney has been wasting taxpayer money putting animal rescue on trial for the past seven weeks, DxE investigators have been busy documenting violations of animal cruelty laws and rescuing individuals in need of emergency medical care.

In 16 days, my 22-month-old little one, her father, our cat, our rabbit and I will be on a one-way flight to Florida.

The home we are leaving is a wood cabin at a nudist resort, 🌞 Lupin Lodge, in the Santa Cruz mountains near the Silicon Valley, where I am the only nudist resident who frequents the communal facilities.

Despite the vastness of this land and the moral support of its staff, I and other residents have been forbidden from gardening out on the land. Therefore, all the human residents & their pets are perpetually dependent on deliveries of food grown far away, in unknown conditions.

From this confinement, I have been slowly building a launch for BYTE: BackYard-to-Table Experiences, a decentralized local food movement that uses immediately available resources. However, I can only demonstrate this as much is immediately available to me.

As my baby deeply sleeps after breastfeeding, I slide out from under her and prepare myself a salad.

This salad comprises entirely of organic produce grown in of California, which I acquired almost entirely from a local farmers market.

Torn dino kale, from Castro Farms, is used to pick up noodles made of zucchini (zoodles), from Bounty of the Valley Farm, with Heirloom Organic tomatoes, Castro fennel, Country Rhodes lemon & avocado.

I have many goodbyes to dispense at the Saturday Saratoga farmers market.

Approximate location, posted in the California Tropical Fruit Growers FB group.

Tree age: “my tree is a little over 7 years. I constantly prune to make sure most of its energy goes into growing large and consistent sweet fruit. It is about 9 feet high right now.”

Planting distance, fertilization, temperature: “just made sure to add plenty of compost close to a foot of it. It helps to raise the temperature a few degrees. It insulates the roots. Also I heavily plant so many of the trees help insulate one another and create a canopy over each other. Inside my garden it is a several degrees warmer since it becomes insulated with all green vegetation. Highly recommend to look how tropical trees grow in their native environment. All crowded”

Pruning: “I do cut the top to help manage the height but most importantly to help the tree focus it’s energy on producing larger and tastier fruit. I have not cut it back to 6 ft. I would imagine it would be ok since most of the fruit is produced on the main large trunks”

It’s time to rain fruit on those recovering from, and incurring, loss.

The gut-brain relationship is important to acknowledge:

Merely filling one’s belly with dry or rehydrated rations, regardless of whether they take the form of nostalgic cultural foods, is not sufficient for stabilizing the gut-brain that underlies our capacity for individual thought and achieving peaceful resolutions.

We need fresh produce to feel well and living.

To help us believe in our capacity for imminent peace, we need to experience a good, healthy model of living that resonates with our capacity to live with the land.

Legumes fix nitrogen from the atmosphere and reduce your total fertilizer needs.
Legumes such as snap peas or green beans can be planted as a crop you plan to harvest, or you can sow a legume cover crop underneath your main crop, such as sowing cowpeas under sweet corn in a garden bed.

Mutual support

Some companion plants can physically support each other, reducing the need for staking or trellising. The most famous example of this is the three sisters model, which integrates corn, squash and beans.

Corn provides a stalk for beans to climb, as well as a visual deterrent for squash insects such as squash vine borer.
Beans provide nitrogen.
And squash can be a deterrent to vertebrate animals like raccoons, which often eat sweet corn.

The three sisters model first emerged in Mesoamerica and has been used by many indigenous communities including Pueblo, Mandan and Iroquois tribes for hundreds of years. This model of combining corn, beans, squash and other vegetables is still the foundation of milpa farming systems in Mesoamerica today.

This is the Willow Glen Ace Hardware Store where you can make a composting toilet.

Build Soil

When you gotta go 💩, where do you go?
1. If it’s a restroom that you can decorate, that’s a good place for a Composting Toilet!
To make your own compost toilet, you need a few things:
1. 2x five-gallon buckets
2. 1x lid for five-gallon bucket or (optional) a toilet seat fitted for a five-gallon bucket
3. Organic debris: a supply of wood shavings, peat moss, grassy compost, or similar
4. 1x large cup, a small bucket, or similar
Fill one of the five-gallon buckets with the organic debris. That is now the Medium bucket.
Scoop some of the organic debris with the large cup into the second five-gallon bucket and put the lid on it. That is the Composting Toilet.
1. TA-DA! The Composting Toilet is now ready to receive.

WHEN YOU HAVE TO GO

Open the lid of the compost toilet
Do your business in it
1. If you use toilet paper, leave paper in the compost toilet.
2. if you use a bidet, let the water fall into the compost toilet. Add a half scoop of organic debris.
Add a scoop of organic debris from the Medium bucket

WHEN THE COMPOSTING TOILET IS FULL, OPTIONS:

Access Instructions

From USDA Forest Service:

The Deep Creek Hot Springs are located in the Deep Creek drainage, outside the city of Apple Valley. The easiest access is through the Bowen Ranch Road, which accesses the site through private land (a fee is charged). The trail descends steeply for 2 1/2 miles to the springs. An alternative route is to hike the Pacific Crest Trail east from Arrowhead Lake Road, roughly a six mile hike.

Directions from Interstate 15

From northbound, exit Main Street in Hesperia, turn right and continue approximately 10 miles.

From southbound, exit Main Street in Hesperia, turn left and continue approximately 10 miles.

Turn left on Rock Springs Road and travel approximately 8 miles east. Rock Springs Road becomes Roundup Way and becomes a graded dirt road.

Turn right on Bowen Ranch Road. Bowen Ranch Road is a graded dirt road and may be subject to weather related damage such as washouts and rutting.

Bowen Ranch is private land. There are alternate routes around the ranch on Bureau of Land Management dirt roads. For directions on the BLM designated routes, contact:

Communal House, memoir

Techie communal home curated around Geoff Schmidt’s dream of it being a place where something great is started.

I dated several of its residents, which caused me to stay often enough to practically live there. I was a “member” who voluntarily managed its residency onboarding. Several members & residents and I found ourselves in the ire of Geoff and his gf.

We were all too emotionally congested to read the situation well and respond appropriately.

Highlights: Cuddle dungeon meetings, psychedelic parties, home concerts with Shevek’s huge soundboard, potlucks, costume closet & clothing swaps.

Vacant lot behind Baja Fresh and Pet Food Express is dry and covered with wild mustard, wild oats, morning glory and more.

Recommendations:

Lay biochar compost, mulch, hugelkultur to remediate and retain moisture.

If locals desire faster growing produce, coordinate with local businesses to attach irrigation to a waterline and erect a fence for a community garden.

Poolside Fruit Stand

Sells fruit and Pool Pass.

Pool Pass is $10 or complementary for every $20 spent at fruit stand, restaurant, or backyard produce stand.

Pool Pass is a ribbon tied onto wristband acquired at Orientation.

Fruit Stand attendant is responsible for sharing pool rules and directing people without wristbands to go to Orientation.

Backyard Produce Booth

This is where small growers can have their products featured in a booth that is operated by a Lupin staffmember.

Placement of produce on the table is free upfront.
Each grower is instructed to make a map note to share about how their crop was grown, and how interested customers can buy directly from them.
Each crop has a placard of the name, small map, QR code to map note.
Price is set by units, discretion applied by booth attendant.
Service & material fees are deducted from sale.
Proceeds go to growers.
