Flowers present a multitude of combinations of colour, size, form, and anatomical arrangement. In some plants, individual flowers are very small and are borne in a distinctive cluster (inflorescence). Each flower consists of a floral axis that bears the essential organs of reproduction (male stamens and/or female pistils) and usually accessory organs (sepals and petals); the latter may serve both to attract pollinating insects (seepollination) and to protect the essential organs. Flower parts are arrayed usually in whorls but sometimes spirally. Four distinct whorls are common: the outer calyx (sepals), the corolla (petals), the androecium (stamens), and, in the centre, the gynoecium (pistils). The sepals are usually greenish and often resemble reduced leaves; the petals are usually colourful and showy. Pollen is produced in the stamens. A pollen-receptive stigma rests atop each pistil. The pistil, made up of one or more carpels, encloses an ovary that contains the ovules, or potential seeds. After fertilization the ovary enlarges to form the fruit. Flowers have been symbols of beauty in most civilizations of the world, and flower giving is still among the most popular of social amenities.

The Family Garden has been in operation since 2007. Founded by Jordan Brown and his wife Diwa, the farm was initially located in Bell, Florida. In 2015 they relocated to east Gainesville, and bought the 20-acre parcel that we currently grow on. We grow all our fruits and vegetables using organic methods, selling both wholesale to local restaurants and businesses in North Florida, and direct to consumers at the Alachua County Farmers Market. The farm also runs a small CSA program. |

Within a few miles of here is a food forest stewarded by Craig, AKA Florida Fruit Geek.
The food forest was an orange orchard, comprised of grafted trees. The base of the trees were sour oranges, so when a hard frost killed back the grafted tops, the sour orange base started shoots.
Craig’s sour oranges are absolutely electric. For cautious eaters, I recommend them to be used as a salad dressing.

Harbison Farm is a ranch market run by a very welcoming family. This is by far the nicest place to pick up produce, especially if you have explorative kids.
There are chickens, ducks, turkeys, Guinea fowl, and friendly dogs for the little ones to enjoy.

Anti-mining protests that have roiled Panama for the last two weeks turned deadly on Tuesday when a man allegedly shot and killed two demonstrators, according to police.
A chilling video posted by bystanders on X, formerly known as Twitter, showed a disheveled elderly man apparently frustrated with the logjam trying to force the protestors to remove a barrier blocking the Pan American highway about 50 miles south of the capital, before pulling out a pistol and opening fire. Panama’s National Police later said they arrested the suspected gunman at the scene of the shooting.
The unusual scene of violence is the latest flashpoint in some of the largest protests to hit the Central American nation since Panamanians flooded the streets en masse to demonstrate against the dictatorship of Manuel Noriega in the 1980s.
For weeks, tens of thousands of protestors have vented their fury at a controversial mining contract given to Minera Panama, the local subsidiary of a Canadian mining company, to extract copper, a key component in electric car batteries.
The contract allows Canada’s First Quantum Minerals to restart an open-pit copper mine surrounded by rain forest for the next 20 years, with the possibility of extending for another 20 years.
Environmentalists say the mine could contaminate drinking water and devastate tracts of the 32,000 acres the company negotiated use of, in exchange for yearly payments of $375 million.
Panama’s government has promised, however, that the mine will bring thousands of jobs in addition to the badly needed revenue. First Quantum Minerals did not respond to CNN’s request for comment on the protests.
Opposition to the mine has united environmentalists, indigenous groups and teachers’ and construction unions who see allegations of backroom dealings between the government and the mining company as further evidence of widespread official corruption.
The protestors accuse the government of selling off the nation’s natural resources at the same moment many Panamanians have been hit with the costs of rising inflation and are feeling the impacts of climate change.
“Panamanians are suffering from lack of water, suffering from droughts, principally in the central provinces, animals that die, harvests that don’t happen,” environmental activist Martita Cornejo told CNN en Español.
“The government did not guage the opposition from Panamanian society to a mining contract.”
But former US ambassador to Panama John Feeley said while much of the outrage is real, the new contract announcement has also presented an opportunity for some groups to try to force their own concessions and win sweetheart deals from the government.
“This is the horrible thing about Panama: Even when you protest corruption, you are probably facilitating it as well,” he said.
Weeks of road blocks set up by protesters have shut down the country, preventing farmers from bringing crops to market and sequestering Panamanians in their homes. According to Panama’s association of company executives, the standstill inflicts $80 million in daily losses to local businesses. Celebrations to mark Panama’s independence from Colombia in 1903 were also widely cancelled last week.
Panama’s President Laurentino Cortizo has defended the mining deal after its announcement on October 20, saying the agreement would create jobs and revenue for Panama.
The mine had provided a rare economic bright spot for Panama where tourism has been slow to recover from the pandemic and the drought has reduced traffic though the Panama Canal, which is expected to a cause a drop of revenue of $200 million in 2024.
“We made the right decision, not the easiest one,” Cortizo said. “After a difficult and complicated negotiation for more than two years, a contract was agreed in 2023 between the company Minera Panama and the Panamanian State, which guarantees much better terms and conditions for the country.”
But as the protests have dragged on, Panama’s government has offered concessions that have done little to deflate the crisis: Last week, congress passed a moratorium on all future metal mining and Cortizo called for a nationwide referendum in December on the controversial project.
In 2017, Panama’s Supreme Court declared another contract to operate the copper mine as unconstitutional, forcing the mining company and government to renegotiate the deal.
Opponents now say they are hopeful that an announcement by Panama’s Supreme Court this week that it is examining the legality of the contract could once again kill the deal.
Whatever the resolution to the crisis, it may be too late to repair the damage done to Panama’s reputation in the region as a rare bastion of political and economic stability.

An organizer who advocated for the release of these chickens has been convicted of a felony. The jury was not allowed to see footage of animal suffering.
DXE message, 11/2/23:
“After 6 days of deliberation, the jury has found animal rescuer Wayne Hsiung GUILTY on three of the four charges in the #SonomaRescueTrial. This includes felony conspiracy and misdemeanor trespass at Sunrise Farms and misdemeanor trespass at Reichardt Duck Farm. The jury could not reach a unanimous verdict on the felony conspiracy charge from the Reichardt action, resulting in a “hung jury” mistrial on that charge.
Wayne was cuffed and immediately taken into custody. He has a sentencing hearing set for November 30th. He will be in jail until then, without bail. We will be mobilizing at the sentencing hearing to support Wayne and defend the #RightToRescue. Please join us on November 30th in Santa Rosa.

Wayne will be appealing this conviction, and this means he has the chance to establish case law in the appellate court. Winning an appeal would not only vindicate his actions but also set a legal precedent that would impact future animal rescue cases.
The mass open rescues at Sunrise Farms and Reichardt Duck Farm that led to this trial were last-resort efforts to aid animals after the authorities ignored repeated reports showing clear evidence of criminal animal cruelty. If the jury had been allowed to see the full extent of suffering at these factory farms, they might have understood that the intent of our actions was not to commit a crime but simply to aid severely neglected animals. This conviction won’t stop us from taking action we know is legally and morally right to aid suffering animals.
In fact, immediately after the verdict, DxE activists went straight from the courtroom to the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office to report new footage from Sunrise Farms and Reichardt that shows sick, injured animals are still languishing at these facilities.
While the District Attorney has been wasting taxpayer money putting animal rescue on trial for the past seven weeks, DxE investigators have been busy documenting violations of animal cruelty laws and rescuing individuals in need of emergency medical care.
Today, we are sharing the stories of two of the animals we’ve saved in the past several weeks, Elsie and River, and we are demanding that the Sonoma County District Attorney finally address the rampant criminal activity at Sunrise and Reichardt. In 16 days, my 22-month-old little one, her father, our cat, our rabbit and I will be on a one-way flight to Florida.
Looking up at my tropical fruit trees from my bed of synthetic materials.
The home we are leaving is a wood cabin at a nudist resort, 
Lupin Lodge, in the Santa Cruz mountains near the Silicon Valley, where I am the only nudist resident who frequents the communal facilities.
Despite the vastness of this land and the moral support of its staff, I and other residents have been forbidden from gardening out on the land. Therefore, all the human residents & their pets are perpetually dependent on deliveries of food grown far away, in unknown conditions.
This 88 year old property, consisting of 112 acres of land, communal facilities, and private dwellings inhabited by ~60 people is being sold by the inheritor for $32.8m.
From this confinement, I have been slowly building a launch for BYTE: BackYard-to-Table Experiences, a decentralized local food movement that uses immediately available resources. However, I can only demonstrate this as much is immediately available to me.
As my baby deeply sleeps after breastfeeding, I slide out from under her and prepare myself a salad.
This salad comprises entirely of organic produce grown in of California, which I acquired almost entirely from a local farmers market.
Torn dino kale, from Castro Farms, is used to pick up noodles made of zucchini (zoodles), from Bounty of the Valley Farm, with Heirloom Organic tomatoes, Castro fennel, Country Rhodes lemon & avocado.

Tree age: “my tree is a little over 7 years. I constantly prune to make sure most of its energy goes into growing large and consistent sweet fruit. It is about 9 feet high right now.”
Planting distance, fertilization, temperature: “just made sure to add plenty of compost close to a foot of it. It helps to raise the temperature a few degrees. It insulates the roots. Also I heavily plant so many of the trees help insulate one another and create a canopy over each other. Inside my garden it is a several degrees warmer since it becomes insulated with all green vegetation. Highly recommend to look how tropical trees grow in their native environment. All crowded”
Pruning: “I do cut the top to help manage the height but most importantly to help the tree focus it’s energy on producing larger and tastier fruit. I have not cut it back to 6 ft. I would imagine it would be ok since most of the fruit is produced on the main large trunks”

I notice they general have guards at exit most of the time, causal not really giving much thought usually lollygagging away on their phone. not a whole lot of stuff locked away generally not too hard to shoplift from I’d rate it a 3/10 difficulty.
Notice there was no security guards and plenty of high-quality items not locked up in a part of Oakland that is kinda rich, notice that Oakland got the cops running around like chickens with their heads cut off, i would not expect this Corportation to remain open much longer due to the corporation having to file for bankruptcy

Made national headlines for being the most shoplifting Walgreen’s in the country, most stuff is locked up even frozen foods and ice cream and can tuna, but still stuff you can hijack, I’ve heard people made unlocked items for them to put in their bags and then proceed to leave, i have had much ease to shoplifting here. no security but i have heard rumors of cop that is nearby that may make you surrender your items.
Has laid back security that mostly just stays at the front of the store, I have shoplifted with ease, I think they mostly used as scarecrows, but police station is one block away but i wouldn’t about if its under $950…
Over guarded for no reson one had two overpaid monkees bombard me for putting one Dr.Bronners bar of soap in my butt pocket, they push hard but i resisted and got with not too much difficulty, but im built like a tank.

I find these to be similar to GEM avocados: soft buttery and flavorful.
Wild Roots sources organic locally-grown avocado varieties from Arrowhead Farms (Watsonville), including Bacon and Pinkerton, at $4.99/lb.
Organic medium-large hass avocados are sold at $5.99/lb, or small hass at $5-6 for 6.
My favorite from this store is the Pinkerton and small hass avocados. The creaminess and flavor of these avocados are amazing!

Building Light – building benches, fixing fences, signage, general beautification
Building Heavy – building structures, installing fences & gates, putting up solar, erecting art & sculpture

The Family Garden has been in operation since 2007. Founded by Jordan Brown and his wife Diwa, the farm was initially located in Bell, Florida. In 2015 they relocated to east Gainesville, and bought the 20-acre parcel that we currently grow on. We grow all our fruits and vegetables using organic methods, selling both wholesale to local restaurants and businesses in North Florida, and direct to consumers at the Alachua County Farmers Market. The farm also runs a small CSA program. |

Within a few miles of here is a food forest stewarded by Craig, AKA Florida Fruit Geek.
The food forest was an orange orchard, comprised of grafted trees. The base of the trees were sour oranges, so when a hard frost killed back the grafted tops, the sour orange base started shoots.
Craig’s sour oranges are absolutely electric. For cautious eaters, I recommend them to be used as a salad dressing.

Raspberries, watermelons and tomatoes fruiting in November
Anti-mining protests that have roiled Panama for the last two weeks turned deadly on Tuesday when a man allegedly shot and killed two demonstrators, according to police.
A chilling video posted by bystanders on X, formerly known as Twitter, showed a disheveled elderly man apparently frustrated with the logjam trying to force the protestors to remove a barrier blocking the Pan American highway about 50 miles south of the capital, before pulling out a pistol and opening fire. Panama’s National Police later said they arrested the suspected gunman at the scene of the shooting.
The unusual scene of violence is the latest flashpoint in some of the largest protests to hit the Central American nation since Panamanians flooded the streets en masse to demonstrate against the dictatorship of Manuel Noriega in the 1980s.
For weeks, tens of thousands of protestors have vented their fury at a controversial mining contract given to Minera Panama, the local subsidiary of a Canadian mining company, to extract copper, a key component in electric car batteries.
The contract allows Canada’s First Quantum Minerals to restart an open-pit copper mine surrounded by rain forest for the next 20 years, with the possibility of extending for another 20 years.
Environmentalists say the mine could contaminate drinking water and devastate tracts of the 32,000 acres the company negotiated use of, in exchange for yearly payments of $375 million.
Panama’s government has promised, however, that the mine will bring thousands of jobs in addition to the badly needed revenue. First Quantum Minerals did not respond to CNN’s request for comment on the protests.
Opposition to the mine has united environmentalists, indigenous groups and teachers’ and construction unions who see allegations of backroom dealings between the government and the mining company as further evidence of widespread official corruption.
The protestors accuse the government of selling off the nation’s natural resources at the same moment many Panamanians have been hit with the costs of rising inflation and are feeling the impacts of climate change.
“Panamanians are suffering from lack of water, suffering from droughts, principally in the central provinces, animals that die, harvests that don’t happen,” environmental activist Martita Cornejo told CNN en Español.
“The government did not guage the opposition from Panamanian society to a mining contract.”
But former US ambassador to Panama John Feeley said while much of the outrage is real, the new contract announcement has also presented an opportunity for some groups to try to force their own concessions and win sweetheart deals from the government.
“This is the horrible thing about Panama: Even when you protest corruption, you are probably facilitating it as well,” he said.
Weeks of road blocks set up by protesters have shut down the country, preventing farmers from bringing crops to market and sequestering Panamanians in their homes. According to Panama’s association of company executives, the standstill inflicts $80 million in daily losses to local businesses. Celebrations to mark Panama’s independence from Colombia in 1903 were also widely cancelled last week.
Panama’s President Laurentino Cortizo has defended the mining deal after its announcement on October 20, saying the agreement would create jobs and revenue for Panama.
The mine had provided a rare economic bright spot for Panama where tourism has been slow to recover from the pandemic and the drought has reduced traffic though the Panama Canal, which is expected to a cause a drop of revenue of $200 million in 2024.
“We made the right decision, not the easiest one,” Cortizo said. “After a difficult and complicated negotiation for more than two years, a contract was agreed in 2023 between the company Minera Panama and the Panamanian State, which guarantees much better terms and conditions for the country.”
But as the protests have dragged on, Panama’s government has offered concessions that have done little to deflate the crisis: Last week, congress passed a moratorium on all future metal mining and Cortizo called for a nationwide referendum in December on the controversial project.
In 2017, Panama’s Supreme Court declared another contract to operate the copper mine as unconstitutional, forcing the mining company and government to renegotiate the deal.
Opponents now say they are hopeful that an announcement by Panama’s Supreme Court this week that it is examining the legality of the contract could once again kill the deal.
Whatever the resolution to the crisis, it may be too late to repair the damage done to Panama’s reputation in the region as a rare bastion of political and economic stability.

Wayne will be appealing this conviction, and this means he has the chance to establish case law in the appellate court. Winning an appeal would not only vindicate his actions but also set a legal precedent that would impact future animal rescue cases.
The mass open rescues at Sunrise Farms and Reichardt Duck Farm that led to this trial were last-resort efforts to aid animals after the authorities ignored repeated reports showing clear evidence of criminal animal cruelty. If the jury had been allowed to see the full extent of suffering at these factory farms, they might have understood that the intent of our actions was not to commit a crime but simply to aid severely neglected animals. This conviction won’t stop us from taking action we know is legally and morally right to aid suffering animals.
In fact, immediately after the verdict, DxE activists went straight from the courtroom to the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office to report new footage from Sunrise Farms and Reichardt that shows sick, injured animals are still languishing at these facilities.
While the District Attorney has been wasting taxpayer money putting animal rescue on trial for the past seven weeks, DxE investigators have been busy documenting violations of animal cruelty laws and rescuing individuals in need of emergency medical care.

In 16 days, my 22-month-old little one, her father, our cat, our rabbit and I will be on a one-way flight to Florida.

The home we are leaving is a wood cabin at a nudist resort, Lupin Lodge, in the Santa Cruz mountains near the Silicon Valley, where I am the only nudist resident who frequents the communal facilities.
Despite the vastness of this land and the moral support of its staff, I and other residents have been forbidden from gardening out on the land. Therefore, all the human residents & their pets are perpetually dependent on deliveries of food grown far away, in unknown conditions.
This 88 year old property, consisting of 112 acres of land, communal facilities, and private dwellings inhabited by ~60 people is being sold by the inheritor for $32.8m.
From this confinement, I have been slowly building a launch for BYTE: BackYard-to-Table Experiences, a decentralized local food movement that uses immediately available resources. However, I can only demonstrate this as much is immediately available to me.

Also I heavily plant so many of the trees help insulate one another and create a canopy over each other. Inside my garden it is a several degrees warmer since it becomes insulated with all green vegetation. Highly recommend to look how tropical trees grow in their native environment. All crowded”

I notice they general have guards at exit most of the time, causal not really giving much thought usually lollygagging away on their phone. not a whole lot of stuff locked away generally not too hard to shoplift from I’d rate it a 3/10 difficulty.

Wild Roots sources organic locally-grown avocado varieties from Arrowhead Farms (Watsonville), including Bacon and Pinkerton, at $4.99/lb.
Organic medium-large hass avocados are sold at $5.99/lb, or small hass at $5-6 for 6.
My favorite from this store is the Pinkerton and small hass avocados. The creaminess and flavor of these avocados are amazing!

There’s always a large variety of different projects taking place at any one given time but generally, we try to fit people where they feel most empowered.
Here is a brief overview of activities available. From gardening to making soil, crafting to lite construction, tinkering to engineering.
Generally, there are four types of activities:
Ecological Light – watering, planting, trimming, spreading wood chips, working with sheep or chickens, general beautification
Ecological Heavy – habitat restoration, tree planting, turning compost
Building Light – building benches, fixing fences, signage, general beautification
Building Heavy – building structures, installing fences & gates, putting up solar, erecting art & sculpture
One thing we ask prior to visiting is filling out our digital waiver, for Adults and Minors

My friend Vittorio has been picking from these fig trees in August for several years. He nicknames one “rattlesnake tree” based on a story of a time he was there; he has stories of the changes of yield and quantity over fluctuations of weather and land management strategies.

Many of these people are skilled, interested in alternative organizations, down on their luck and appreciative of donations of fresh food and water (which is in constant need).
This is not a camp: it has no name, dwellings nor organization. It is an unofficial hangout spot with many regulars and visitors.
